Alexander Cabinet Works is a custom cabinet shop in Cary, NC with a brand new product designed especially for children.
Why did we choose to create a children’s product?
Having read the statistics of the decline of our children’s attention spans and the increase in learning disabilities, we wanted to provide a solution.
The AlexaDesk is a creative play and learning center that gives a very young child their own special space to encourage healthy brain development. Old fashioned playtime allows children to practice decision making skills, move at their own pace and discover their own areas of interest.
Creative play can overcome
the stresses of highly scheduled lives and remove the harmful effects of passive media stimulation.
“With creative play, children blossom and flourish; without it they suffer a serious decline.”
In fact, many elementary teachers comment that by age 9 or 10, children seem burned out and uninterested in learning.
Over the past several decades, children have been increasingly exposed to media via television, videos and computer games which promotes brain development that causes a child to be much more excitable and “addicted” to screen changes. These often occur every 6 to 8 seconds. Because a child’s brain continues to develop after birth, these recurring images program the brain to prefer this non-focusing activity.
John Rosemond, a famous and well respected parenting specialist, has two children that are now in their 30’s. He noticed them watching TV when they were 8 and 10 year olds and saw the impact this had on their behavior. One day, after he “removed” the television, saying it was broken, they asked when it would be back and he replied, “Never”. They were not too happy about this at first but within 2 weeks they had changed their behavior dramatically and became avid readers. Today, they are each parents of two children that do not watch television and are very pleasant to be with.
Young children are capable of long periods of quiet concentration. They respond positively to an atmosphere of calm and order. A young child’s love for a consistent and often repeated routine includes a love of having everything in it’s place. This personal space encourages the development of a child’s independence and sense of personal empowerment. Keeping all their books, puzzles, craft supplies, Lego pieces, trucks, games and toys in one area, within easy reach, teaches independence and self discipline.
Success in school is directly connected to what children believe they are personally capable of achieving. Children are driven by their desire to become independent and competent beings in the world; they love to learn new things and master new skills. Their motto could be, “Help me to learn to do it myself”. By developing a meaningful degree of independence and self-discipline they set their own pattern for a lifetime of good work habits and a sense of responsibility.
Our compact L-shaped desk with 3 storage shelves minimizes congestion in a child’s room and increases the amount of floor space for playing. Storage shelves are invaluable for keeping rooms organized and clutter free.
The desk fits in a corner, at the end of a twin bed or under a loft bed. It is made of unfinished 3/4” maple or white oak plywood. As the child’s room changes from babyhood to preschool, etc., the wood can be painted or stained to match the many room decorating changes.
The best part about the AlexaDesk is that it can be used from toddlerhood to the teenage years.
The desktop and shelves adjust every 2”.
Over a span of 10+ years the AlexaDesk will provide hundreds of hours of active, independent and reflective playtime and educational learning.
